Original artwork description:

This painting depicts a enigmatic subject staring straight back at the viewer. The expression poses questions to the viewer and challenges them.

The gold leaf discs below the eyes are real 24-carat gold leaf. They are inspired by Byzantine art and their use of gold to adorn idols. These take the viewer out of the photorealist aspect of the painting and make them aware they are viewing an image and so serve to deconstruct the painting a little.

Exhibited at 2 Queens Members Show, Leicester, 2020

Materials used:

Oil, 24-carat Gold Leaf
