Plums In Black Porcelain (2023) Original Oil Painting by Regimantas Valiukas

Plums in Black Porcelain began with a very simple still-life idea: ripe plums placed in a dark porcelain bowl. I was drawn to the contrast between the deep, almost black surface of the porcelain and the rich yellow, violet and red tones of the fruit.

The painting developed slowly, with particular attention to reflected light, subtle color transitions and the different surface qualities of porcelain and fruit. I wanted the composition to remain quiet and restrained, allowing the light, texture and natural irregularity of the plums to carry the image.

What makes this work special to me is the balance between precision and simplicity. The subject is ordinary, but careful observation reveals a surprising amount of color, depth and visual complexity.
