There is a line in this painting where the present ends and memory begins. The old tree, its roots laid bare, stands sharp and tangible in the foreground — this is the present, what is still here. Behind it, everything dissolves into violet and turquoise, loses its edges, becomes what can only be remembered. In the water, the tree appears once more, quieter, blurred — as if memory itself were looking back at what had only just been present.
