This painting captures the first moments of dawn at Craster on the Northumbrian coast, before the day has fully awakened.

The sea, stretches across the canvas board in deep shades of indigo, charcoal, and muted blue-black. The water appears almost heavy in the early morning darkness, its surface textured with gentle swells that catch only the faintest glimmers of light. Small ripples reflect hints of silver where the coming sun begins to touch the horizon.

A summer sunrise emerges as a narrow band of glowing colour. Brilliant gold, soft amber, and delicate peach tones spread across the horizon, creating a striking contrast against the dark sea below.

Above this luminous horizon, the mood changes dramatically where the sky is filled with towering storm clouds, painted in rich layers of slate grey, deep violet, and near-black. Their edges are ragged and turbulent, suggesting unsettled weather lingering from the night. Yet the rising sun catches their edges, adding depth and drama.

The overall atmosphere is one of contrast and anticipation: the darkness of sea and storm clouds yielding to the warmth and promise of a summer sunrise. The painting feels both powerful and peaceful, capturing a fleeting moment when night, storm, and dawn coexist over the North Sea.
