No way (2023) Original Oil Painting by Félix Rubio

No Way emerges from a process of construction and deconstruction in which the figure was not painted as a fixed anatomical study, but gradually discovered through successive layers of paint, revisions, and chromatic adjustments. Working with oils in a direct and expressive manner, Félix Rubio built the body through broad planes of color, allowing each brushstroke to remain visible as part of the final image.

The painting evolved over time through multiple stages of observation and reinterpretation. Warm earth tones, pale flesh colors, cool grays, and deep shadows were layered, scraped back, and repainted, creating a surface where the history of the process remains present. Rather than pursuing realism, the artist sought to reveal the psychological and existential presence of the sitter.

The seated figure appears suspended between vulnerability and endurance. The elongated face, prominent bone structure, and fragmented modeling of the body evoke a sense of human resilience marked by time and experience. The title, No Way, can be understood as both a refusal and a recognition of limits—an encounter with circumstances that cannot be escaped, yet must be confronted.

The restrained blue-gray background isolates the figure, intensifying its presence and directing attention to the tension between physical fragility and inner strength. Through visible brushwork and expressive distortions, the work transforms a portrait into a meditation on aging, persistence, and the human condition.

Keywords: contemporary figurative art, expressive portrait, existential painting, psychological figure, oil on canvas, impasto, anti-realist art, human condition, meditation, resilience.
