This watercolour painting depicts a quiet waterway scene in Japan during the evening, focusing on a tugboat moored along the wharf. I was interested in the realistic play of light and shadow—how the low evening sun hits the structure of the vessel while the background structures remain in deep shadow. By capturing the orange reflection of the sunset on the rippling dark water, I wanted to record the calm atmosphere and the actual texture of the waterfront at the end of the day.
