About Masato Watanabe

Biography

I choose watercolor painting as my medium to maximize transparency, focusing on capturing the interplay of light and shadow found in various landscapes. My goal is to convey the nostalgia and unique atmosphere of Japan, from the traditional townscapes of Kyoto and Osaka to natural landscapes, steam locomotives, and streetcars.

To achieve the contrast between light and shadow, I employ a meticulous, multi-layered masking technique using masking fluid and tape. This process allows me to preserve the crisp brightness of the highlights while guiding a rich gradation from light to dark. Through extensive masking, I can define precise shapes—such as foliage and architectural structures—that are impossible to capture with a brush alone, while also rendering light and shadow. I also focus deeply on capturing the textures of rusting metal and weathered wood. Through this delicate method, I aim to maximize the quiet, emotional beauty of everyday Japanese scenes, bringing a sense of presence to the viewer.
