Sunlight and Shadows in Kibune, Kyoto (2014) Original Watercolour by Masato Watanabe

In this watercolor painting, I captured a sunlit street scene in Kibune, a forested valley in northern Kyoto. I approached this piece with a sketch-like spontaneity, focusing on the strong contrast between the bright light filtering through the dense green canopy and the deep shadows cast upon the road. By using fluid watercolor washes and broad brushstrokes, I expressed the traditional buildings, the utility pole, and the figures walking by. My goal was to honestly convey the fresh air and the vibrant, shifting light of that afternoon.
