Lookout from the bloom (2026) Original Oil Painting by Steffan Johnson

43.18 x 33.02 x 4.45cm (framed) / 35.56 x 25.4cm (actual image size)

£265

This artwork was inspired by my love of Bluetits and their connection to the Goldfinch painting by  Dutch Golden Age artist Carel Fabritius. Their bright blue plumage and energetic foraging habits in the garden make them attractive and interesting to watch. This was painted in oils on board which brings depth and structure to the work and the background is looser and more playful to bring out the colours of the Bluetit perched on the Cherry blossom. The meaning behind these Bird-themed paintings is simply that joy of observing their habit, the joy of watching them scour the garden in pairs of even groups to find some form of food, or they just laying and exploring? Painting well known garden birds is something I often come back to paint - whether I've been doing more involved landscape pieces or work towards shows - painting birds never fail to uplift me in my painting endeavours. Their personalities and form always inspire me to capture them and share that with others.

Materials used:

Oil on 290gsm acid-free fine linen textured oil painting paper
