This painting was inspired by one of the greatest drummers in jazz history: Art Blakey. The highest quality drummers are jazz. I was also taken by Art Blakey's jazzy face expression as he plays music. Central composition creates rhythm. There is a balance between expressive application of paint (to convey energy) and finely controlled portraiture painting.
