Embrace of the Sun

This circular painting is one of the latest works in my “Sun, Sea, Sand” series, a research-based project exploring the transformation of human experience in an age of social acceleration.

At the centre of this project is the beach — a place where people temporarily step outside their everyday social roles and reconnect with their bodies, memories, and their perception of time. Yet today’s beach is no longer simply a place of rest. It has become a space of mass tourism, consumption, and temporary existence, where even the pursuit of leisure is increasingly shaped by the same logic of efficiency that governs everyday life.

The project grew out of my many years of observing people on Mediterranean beaches. For me, the beach becomes a model of contemporary society, where freedom coexists with anonymity and individual experience merges with mass culture.

To remove all unnecessary details and focus the viewer’s attention on the experience itself, I chose an unusual viewpoint from above. The child seems to dissolve into the vibrant inflatable ring, which becomes not only a beach object but an independent pictorial form.

In this painting, the girl embraces the warmth of the sun. The shimmering colours of the inflatable ring enhance the feeling of light, movement, and summer air. The child’s figure and the arms extending beyond the circular panel are made from MDF and painted with oil colours, allowing the image to break beyond the boundaries of the painting and become more spatial.

This work is filled with the feeling of sunshine, joy, and the carefree spirit of summer. I wanted to preserve that rare state in which a single summer day feels like a small, complete life of its own, existing outside the ordinary flow of time.
