Original artwork description
Illuminations was created in memory of my brother Doug, whose life was marked by extraordinary generosity, creativity, and a quiet commitment to bringing joy to others. Through years of designing holiday displays and festive environments, he created moments of light that countless people enjoyed without ever knowing the dedication, sacrifice, and perseverance required to make them possible.
The painting is not a portrait of Doug, but of the life he lived.
Layered passages of color, partially obscured forms, and luminous surfaces reflect the complexity beneath what others often saw. Brightness exists alongside fractured geometry, buried textures, and veiled passages, suggesting that beauty rarely exists without effort and that the most generous lives often conceal their greatest burdens. Rather than illustrating specific memories, the work seeks to evoke the accumulation of experiences that shaped the person behind the celebration.
The title carries a deliberate double meaning. An illumination is both a source of light and a moment of revelation. Historically, illuminated manuscripts transformed ordinary pages through color and ornament. In much the same way, Doug transformed ordinary spaces into places of wonder, giving others moments of delight through his imagination and generosity.
Ultimately, Illuminations is not simply about light. It is about the people who create it.
It is a tribute to those whose kindness, creativity, and quiet devotion brighten the lives of others, often without recognition of what that light has cost them.
