Original artwork description
“Decorative Instinct 9” is an original contemporary artwork on paper by Lena Langer, created with acrylic and markers. Part of the artist’s Decorative Instinct series, the work explores flatness, visual irony, and the idea of comfort through a deliberately decorative still-life composition.
The scene brings together a vintage rotary telephone, a vase filled with stylized branches, and a patterned tabletop arranged against broad geometric fields of muted blue, grey, peach, and green. Rather than constructing realistic depth, Lena Langer keeps the composition intentionally flat, allowing contour, color, and rhythm to define the image.
The rotary telephone becomes the central visual and symbolic element. Once an ordinary domestic object, it now carries associations of memory, waiting, conversation, and a slower form of communication. Within the composition, it functions almost as a cultural sign — instantly recognizable, slightly nostalgic, and emotionally charged.
The palette is restrained and calm. Cool blue and grey tones are softened by pale pink and peach, while the plant introduces an organic counterpoint to the strict geometry of the telephone and the surrounding planes. This balance between hard and soft forms gives the work its decorative tension.
Within the Decorative Instinct series, Lena Langer treats familiar household objects as visual shorthand for comfort and personal space. A telephone, vase, plant, or patterned surface becomes more than an object; it becomes part of a recognizable system through which we construct the idea of home.
The subtle irony of the series lies in the deliberate flatness and simplification. The artist does not try to hide the decorative nature of the image. Instead, decorativeness itself becomes the subject, turning everyday objects into signs of memory, atmosphere, and domestic identity.
With its compact vertical format and muted graphic palette, “Decorative Instinct 9” is well suited to contemporary, eclectic, Scandinavian-inspired, retro-influenced, or design-led interiors. It can work especially well in a hallway, reading corner, studio, office, bedroom, or curated gallery wall.
