Original artwork description
Signal Rating: 7/10 — Significant
Classification: Hypnagogic
This painting by Ryan Louder is part of a body of work shaped by his neurological condition — Narcolepsy with REM Intrusion Hallucinations, clinically confirmed via MSLT at Guy's Hospital, London. The work contains hypnagogic imagery — embedded secondary images, phantom figures, and forms emerging from within the scene.
Neuroaesthetic markers identified: self-luminous forms (cloud radiates from interior); phantom figures (cloud reads as emergent robed figure); boundary dissolution
These markers are not deliberate artistic techniques but direct visual recordings of what REM intrusion hallucinations look like. The imagery emerges from neurological experience, not metaphor. Ryan has painted over 2,000 works, with over 1,000 originals sold. Each painting in this collection has been subjected to neuroaesthetic forensic analysis to identify and catalogue the perceptual phenomena present.
A standing figure in blue-grey skirt and dark top occupies the lower-centre foreground, back to the viewer, facing a sky in dramatic dissolution. A cloud mass at the upper right glows from within — yellows, whites, and warm oranges pressing through turbulent grey — while the upper left holds vertical golden forms whose geometry is too regular for cloud and too unresolved for any named object. The ground beneath the figure is worked in warm coral and salmon, with white impasto passages reading as light falling or forms rising from the earth. The figure is the most grounded element but even their lower body is absorbed into the warm foreground field.
