Blue Hills (2020) Original Acrylic Painting by Galina Zimmatore

Blue Hills is an original semi-abstract landscape painting inspired by a reservoir high in Dartmoor National Park in Devon.

I began with a more recognisable view of the reservoir, building up many layers of colour before sanding parts of the surface back. As the original image gradually disappeared, the painting became more about atmosphere, memory and the feeling of being in the landscape.

I was thinking about frosty hills, winter sunlight and the cold, crisp air of Dartmoor early in the morning. The changing layers create a sense of distance and movement, while the blue tones bring a quiet, cool atmosphere to the work.

Acrylic, charcoal, pastel and stencil marks add depth and texture, allowing the landscape to move between recognition and abstraction. Rather than reproducing one particular view, I wanted to capture the feeling of sunlight moving across the hills.
