Artificial Flowers: Residue is a new work from Gela Mikava’s Artificial Flowers series, created on reclaimed Soviet-era cotton fabric.

The original floral pattern remains visible beneath layers of paint, but only in fragments. Parts of the fabric are covered, erased, and transformed, creating a tension between decoration and disappearance.

For Mikava, the fabric is not simply a support. It is a pre-existing surface carrying traces of domestic life and cultural memory. By painting over and partially revealing its original floral imagery, he transforms a familiar decorative pattern into an unstable landscape of color, texture, memory, and loss.

The work explores the persistence of images and memories after the world that produced them has changed. What remains is neither the original decoration nor a complete erasure, but a residue between the two.
