Ancient Medieval City

A view from a hotel window over an old medieval city, glowing at the edges like a half-faded memory. It’s a place I never actually visited, and yet I remember it.

40 years ago I was on a train that stopped at San Gimignano. I felt the impulse to get off, and I didn’t. I’ve thought about that town ever since as though I had been there: the light, the towers, the view from a window I never looked out of. This small painting comes from that imagined memory, a city that almost was.

I wanted it to feel intimate and contained, like a recollection that has grown hazy but still glows. It’s an image borrowed from time, half memory and half invention, and it holds a quiet nostalgia for the road not taken and for the enduring beauty of old places.

About
I paint small, strange, glowing worlds: night skies, a blossom tree in my garden, half-remembered landscapes. Each one feels like a window, or a fragment of a bigger scene that... Read more
