Afterglow (2026) Original Oil Painting by Ulyana Korol

Afterglow was inspired by the fleeting moment when the warmth of sunset meets the cool surface of the sea.

I wanted to capture the feeling of standing before the water at the end of the day, when the sky is still glowing but the light is already beginning to fade. Warm orange, amber and red tones gradually meet silvery blue and grey reflections, creating a quiet tension between warmth and coolness.

The surface of the sea is built with layered oil paint and visible palette-knife marks. I kept the movement of the strokes expressive and tactile, allowing the water to feel alive rather than perfectly still. Small variations of colour emerge through the layers, giving the surface a sense of depth and changing light.

Afterglow is part of my ongoing Water Reflections series, in which I explore water not simply as a landscape subject, but as a place where light, colour and emotion continually change.

This original 50 × 50 cm oil painting on canvas is a quiet, luminous work that can bring a sense of warmth and contemplation to a contemporary interior.
