There are mornings when a harbour becomes almost perfectly still, and the water seems to borrow the sky.

In A Harbour Holds the Sky, working fishing boats crowd the wharf, surrounded by masts, ropes, buoys and the practical equipment of everyday maritime life. Yet beneath all that activity, the water is remarkably calm. Boats and clouds appear again in reflection, softened and slightly broken by the faintest movement on the surface.

The contrast is what gives this scene its character. The harbour itself is busy and intricate, filled with overlapping vessels and rigging, while above it stretches an enormous, open sky. Soft clouds touched with pale pink and lavender rise against clear blue, bringing lightness to the density of the working waterfront below. Their reflections carry that spaciousness into the foreground, making the water feel almost as deep as the sky overhead.

This is a view of the Atlantic coast not as a dramatic wilderness, but as a lived-in place—a harbour where boats return, equipment accumulates, and another working day begins under an unexpectedly beautiful sky.
