About Rick Wedel

  • Biography
In my work I'm seeking a balance between the human form and the expressive mark. We have such an innate relationship to the figure, that even in their generalized or abstracted states, they still have a strong influence. I rely on their visual weight to ground my mix of color, texture, light and space. Interpretation has been a strong element in my paintings for over 20 years. I'm seeking a dynamic image that will change for the viewer over time, physical distance, light and personal experience. My goal is to create starting points from which the viewer may play.

Venue: Village Theater Gallery, Canton, Michigan

8 Recent life-sized figurative paintings were exhibited, along with a small group of abstracted landscapes. The large 2-canvas composition Peoples Perk no.9 was shown here first, then went on loan to the city of Canton and was displayed publicly for the following year.

Venue: Duncan & Miller Gallery, Washington, DC

I was offered a solo show at Duncan & Miller Gallery in Washington, DC in 2000. In total 14 canvases were exhibited, with an artist reception attended by my partner and myself. It was put together by gallery director Claire Hushle.

    Event: Figure This

    Dates: March 2, 1999 - April 2, 1999

Venue: Plymouth Community Arts Council, Plymouth, MI

My first show out of college, this show was my public introduction as a painter. I hung 12 paintings, held a reception and saw several sales during the show's 30 day run. It gave me a bolt of energy & encouragement to continue painting, at whatever rate I was able to, for years to come.

    Event: Representation 1999 - 2010
