About Marijean Harris

  • Biography

My paintings explore the quiet tension between what is seen and what is felt. Working intuitively, I build each surface in layers through painting, scraping, scumbling, and mark-making, allowing the image to emerge gradually rather than be fully planned from the start. I’m interested in landscapes as emotional spaces—places shaped by memory, atmosphere, light, and movement more than by literal description.

Nature is both subject and source, but my paintings are not depictions of specific locations. Instead, they reflect the afterimage of place: shifting weather, changing light, grounded earth, and the fleeting feeling of being somewhere meaningful. I’m drawn to texture, depth, and the dialogue between control and spontaneity, using these elements to create a sense of stillness, energy, and reflection. Through this process, I aim to invite viewers into a space that feels familiar yet unresolved, where landscape becomes a way of holding experience, memory, and emotion at once.
