Biography
To Maja the meaning of painting considers, above all, an empty surface,
that then becomes a space in which one seeks and reaches the formula of
some kind of enlightenment and symbolical self-inclusion to the process
of life, through the magical appeal of the unknown. This attitude
involves complete openness that leads to fusion of two spaces, spiritual
and physical. The tension that rises from this dichotomy, from the
confrontation of internal and external, is the seed to a constant
generation of exciting visual substances. They vary between
associative-abstract, figurative and symbolic. Thus, it is a unique
eloquence that fuses them together in an organic whole. The visual
language of Maja is founded, upon all, in the intensive, yet sensitive
colouring. At the same time, it represents a complex system of
morphological processes that involve a constant movement and dialectical
growth. In this visual idea nothing is final. The semantic game of
searching and revealing is happening within her works as a perpetual
cycle of creation and reshaping. At the same time, they keep within the
authentic excitement of creation projected on the viewer, and bring one
inside this dynamic and suggestive process.
Dragana Kovacic, art historian and curator at National Museum in Belgrade, from the catalogue for exhibition in Gallery SULUJ, Belgrade.
"Every blade of grass, leaf, rock or water flowing, carries vibration of feelings, memories, love in the broadest sense, a link with the past and ancestors, a glimmer of distant time events in cosmos, a hint of eternity. Listening to the voice of internal intuition, my paintings are searching for those feelings, the myths of the past, once lived moment in space and time, and are looking for a connection between pre-state and the moment in which they arise. My tendency is not to impose my own sensation of experienced in this process, but to encourage the contemplation and bring the viewer into the picture as a participant in the creative process, so that the image lives on and continues to develop in the eye of the beholder. Nature, whether it's an organic or non-organic world, in itself leads to contemplation. And there, in that inner world, the thoughtfulness that has no use for practical implementation, ultimately leads to creation."Maja Grecic
Maja Grecic emerged as an artist studying at Belgrade University of Arts, Serbia, where a good, traditional approach to figurative painting was nurtured as foundation for any further course of development. Her art journey led her towards abstract art during her studies, when she did a series of bigger paintings inspired by her sister Tatiana Grecic's composition "Dolphin variations" for piano. Most of the paintings she painted over the years had an Abstract etiquette, but were always based on elements from reality that appeared as fragments and symbols, more or less visible. She speaks through colour to express her intimate thoughts. It is always her personal experience and emotion that is a source of ideas for her next work.
She obtained MFA degree in painting from University of Fine Arts in Belgrade in 1999. She is a member of Serbian Fine Artists Association (ULUS), since 1994. Since 1989 she took part in many solo and group exhibitions both in Serbia, UK and Europe. She was an artist in residence at "Cite Internationale des Arts", Paris, France, in 2000.
Maja now lives and creates in South West Wales, UK.
