Biography
I am an internationally collected multidisciplinary painter and sculptor living and working in Toronto. While my main focus is Abstract Expressionist painting, I also have a passion for sculpting, painting, and drawing the human form for which I was academically trained at the Academy of Realist Art in Toronto.
For the most part, my abstract work is bold and entirely conceptual. I create with a gestural brushwork to convey emotion and reaction. I begin by randomly applying a heavy-bodied Gesso base to the canvas to create an impromptu geometric design. Using this design as a template for acrylic paint application, I employ large brushes and palette knives allowing the paint freedom to drip while scraping out areas of interest to reveal the underpainting.
In 2007, after first having a successful career in healthcare, I moved into art full time with the opening of my own gallery in Toronto where I represented myself along with approximately twenty other artists.
In 2015 I made the decision to sell the gallery in order to focus entirely on my own work.
Over the last fifteen years, I have had the opportunity to exhibit in solo and group shows within Canada, the United States, and Europe. Featured on several occasions in American Art Collector magazine since 2009, my work is found in private and public collections in Canada and Internationally.
I would say that I have been most influenced by the Abstract Expressionist movement of post-World War II America such as the works of Robert Motherwell, Franz Kline, and Hans Hofmann as well as the works of Joan Mitchell and Canadian artist, Jean Albert McEwen
"For me, the use of music, texture, and movement are the most important components in the creative process" Joyce Fournier 2023
