About Debbie Young

Biography

I am an artist located in beautiful Southern Scotland where I live with my husband and two golden retrievers.   In 2015 I retired from my career in teaching and decided to concentrate on my art and creativity.  I find the whole process absorbing but at the same time, relaxing.
My preferred medium is modern alkyd oils which is fast drying compared to hitherto and I  build up, layer upon layer with the last layer reserved for fine detail.   For me, oils have the intensity of colour that is rivalled by no other.   A few years ago I discovered chalk pastels which have different qualities and love the softness which they create.   I love realism, impressionism and I have a growing love for abstract.   I paint mainly still life, landscapes and animals.   Most days, I can be found working with oils in my little studio.
My training comes from a lifetime of passion and creativity.   I have no rules and no one to please but myself and my customers. I mainly sell my paintings in the UK, USA, Canada and Europe.  Inspiration for my work comes from the beauty that surrounds me, mainly the Scottish landscape, life's little quirks and the images that I have dancing around in my head.   I pride myself in shipping oil paintings in a bespoke wooden crate for protection.  This helps to enable the piece to reach its destination in pristine condition, even if it has travelled half way around the world .
I will accept some commissions if the photograph is of good enough quality to enable me to do so.
