About Helena Palazzi

Biography

I am a Swedish-Italian artist based in Kingston, New York, creating contemporary abstract paintings and monotype prints that explore the quiet spaces between revealing and concealing, presence and absence, and order and intuition. My work is an invitation to slow down—to notice what emerges in the moments between certainty and ambiguity.

Working primarily with oil, acrylic, graphite, ink, and mixed media, I build each piece through many translucent layers. Paint is poured, brushed, wiped away, scratched back, and glazed, allowing traces of earlier decisions to remain visible beneath the surface. Fine linear marks and subtle shifts in tone become a visual language of their own, creating paintings that reveal themselves gradually rather than all at once.

Alongside painting, monotype printmaking has become an important part of my practice. I am drawn to its balance of control and unpredictability. The process often introduces unexpected textures, gestures, and compositions that find their way back into my paintings, creating an ongoing dialogue between the two mediums.

Inspired by Scandinavian light and the fleeting atmosphere of the blue hour, I work with restrained palettes and minimal elements, searching for the point where a single mark, a softened edge, or a quiet shift in color can carry the emotional weight of the whole. I am interested in what is left unsaid—in the spaces between what is hidden and what is revealed—and in creating work that invites contemplation rather than demanding attention.

My hope is that each painting offers a place to pause, breathe, and discover something different each time it is seen.
