Biography
Ann developed her reputation as a plein air painter working out of a beach hut in Whitstable; she now works primarily from her Garden Studio in Rochester where has lived for 40 years. Ann grew up in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, and in Tavistock on the edge of Dartmoor, spending time on the family farm in Somerset and the beaches of Dorset and Cornwall. Ann worked for the NHS as a Public Health Doctor and has been painting for nearly 20 years.
Ann paints the land, sea and sky using mixed media and oils, on both large and small canvases. Her inspiration comes from the landscape, focussing on the lie of the land, the state of the tide and weathers at various times of day and year; her experience standing on the seashore and the fields immersing herself in the environment, getting to know the scene and the colours. Ann loves painting in the field or on the beach, this can be plein air mixed media or oil, pen and ink sketches, photos and just being there. Sketching and plein air painting are an essential part of her process.
When Ann is in the studio her memories play an important part in working up a painting. Ann uses line, brush and palette knife often producing highly textural work; carefully placing the colours juxtaposed with each other resulting in a more abstract form of the subject. She is best known for her seascapes, but is now gaining recognition for her modern landscapes. Ann is working to produce looser paintings which give the essence of her experience.
Ann exhibits widely in Kent, often in Whitstable, sometimes in London and further afield, Bath Art Fair is a favourite. She is represented by AccorsiArte in Turin and Venice. Her work can be found in galleries in Margate, West Malling and Muscroft Gallery in Margate. Ann is represented by Accorsi Arte in Turin and Venice and across Europe. She also exhibits at Art Fairs in London, Bath and Rochester.
