The ancient Mayans worshipped different gods and goddesses, who were playing an important role in all aspects of life. Yum Kaax - the nature god - is God of the woods, of wild nature, and of the hunt; invoked before carving out a maize field from the wilderness. Being a god of wild plants and of wild animals, that are important to hunters, he grants protection of the fields against the incursions of the wild nature he himself represents. He can appear to hunters in an instant and possesses songs that will warrant a hunter success and allow his arrows to come back to him.
