Von Ahnska Magasinet 3/10 (2026) Etchings & engravings by Bart Demeestere

21 x 30cm (unframed) / 15 x 22cm (actual image size)

£128.15

Von Ahnska Magasinet stands on Västra Strandgatan in Umeå, wedged between the river and the modern cityscape. The building was erected in 1887 by Lieutenant Colonel von Hedenberg and bought the following year by the merchant Johan Viktor von Ahn, who had it extended towards the river. The red timber building with green-painted window shutters is one of the few surviving examples of Umeå's pre-fire wooden architecture, and was declared a listed building in 1980.
In the print, two layers of time meet: the historical warehouse's horizontal timber cladding and the vertical window panes of the office building behind it. Contrast makes the city rich and heterogeneous.
This is a unique state print: every impression is individually hand-painted with watercolour. No two are identical. I have only made 10 of them; this is number 3.

Materials used:

alukraft plate, Akua intaglio ink, watercolour, handmade paper
