Venus and Moon over Blue Water (2018) Original Mixed-media Painting by Phyllis Mahon

Venus is a golden haired, pale skinned woman about to kiss the crescent moon which is lying low over the blue waves.

This artwork is both collage and painting. The face is a frottage on Japanese paper, applied to the blue/grey handmade paper on which I've painted the moon and the waves in watercolour. Highlights are in gold acrylic for Venus's hair, and white chalk pastel creates a shimmering effect on the water, a glow in the moon and on Venus's face to portray the starlight in her hair.

Just as I was finishing off this image in the week of early December 2018, there was a superb Venus/Moon conjunction low in the southeast before dawn, hence the title of the work.

This Indian handmade paper is one of my favourite mediums. It has a lovely deckled edge which, when framed, can be shown off with the image 'floated' inside a mount/mat, or of course the mat can cover the edge the paper as the buyer prefers.
