Urban Connections grew out of my interest in observing people in urban spaces, especially those moments when many individual lives briefly come together in the same place. In a city, we can walk side by side, share the same street and look at the same things, while each of us continues to experience that moment in a different way.

In this painting, the figures are physically close, yet many seem absorbed in their own experience. Some are taking photographs or looking at their phones, connected to what is happening around them while also caught up in their own world. I was interested in this coexistence of proximity and distance, rather than in giving it a single meaning.

I wanted these relationships to become part of the painting itself. I worked the oil paint with a palette knife, building the figures and the city through fragmented forms and a tactile surface. Reds, blues, greens, yellows and oranges appear in different parts of the canvas, creating visual links between separate figures and elements. Colour becomes another form of connection.

I also deliberately left large areas of white canvas open. The empty space gives the scene room to breathe, creates intervals between the figures and makes their relationships more visible. For me, the space between people is as significant as the people themselves.

Urban Connections belongs to my Metropolitan series, where I explore how individuals inhabit contemporary cities and relate to the people and spaces around them. I am interested in the complexity of these encounters: each person retains their individuality while becoming, even briefly, part of a larger and constantly changing whole.
