Una Cuncuna Amarilla (2024) Original Mixed-media Painting by Sarah Kutz

Yellow Cuncuna grew out of a children's song by the Chilean band Mazapán, and carries the same playful, joyful spirit. Once the layers and textures of the background were built up, a large yellow creature emerged — the cuncuna — made up of many smaller creatures moving together in a line, as if caught mid-journey. Its bright yellow plays against a bluish-green background that echoes the foliage of a tree set against the sky, letting the story surface the way it always does in my work: after the process, not before it.
