Original artwork description
Ukrainian Hills of My Childhood is a collection of paintings inspired by the quiet countryside of a small village near Kyiv, Ukraine. These landscapes are not exact geographical places, but emotional memories of rural life — soft hills, winding paths, white houses, and trees standing peacefully among open fields.
The series reflects the feeling of growing up surrounded by nature, where roads slowly curve through the land and simple homes sit gently on the hills. These places hold the atmosphere of childhood — calm mornings, long walks, and the deep sense of belonging that only a homeland can give.
Rather than focusing on precise realism, the paintings capture the memory of a place. Forms are simplified and slightly abstracted, allowing the viewer to experience the landscape the way memory holds it: soft, quiet, and filled with emotion.
Landscape Inspiration
The scenes are inspired by rural villages located in the hills outside Kyiv. This region is known for its open fields, gentle slopes, small houses, and winding country roads. The landscapes carry a sense of openness and peace — where nature, home, and everyday life exist in harmony.
These paintings celebrate the beauty of ordinary rural moments: a house on a hill, a road crossing the fields, trees bending in the wind, and the quiet presence of the countryside.
Color Palette
Color plays a central role in the emotional atmosphere of the series.
The paintings use a harmonious palette of soft yet vibrant tones:
warm golden yellows representing sunlit fields
gentle greens symbolizing the living countryside
soft pastel pinks and lavenders reflecting distant horizons
deep blues and navy tones adding depth and contrast
touches of orange and coral bringing warmth and life to the compositions
The colors are intentionally expressive rather than literal. They create a feeling of light, memory, and warmth — similar to how landscapes appear in our recollections over time.
Artistic Approach
The works combine elements of contemporary landscape and abstraction. Lines are fluid and organic, guiding the viewer’s eye through the hills and roads. Houses and trees appear as quiet landmarks within the composition, symbols of home and stability.
This balance between abstraction and recognizable landscape invites the viewer to connect their own memories with the scenes.
Emotional Meaning
At its heart, Hills of My Childhood is about home — not just as a place, but as a feeling. The series speaks about nostalgia, belonging, and the quiet beauty of rural life.
It is an invitation to slow down, breathe, and remember the landscapes that shaped us.
