Artwork description:

Tulip Daze is inspired by the sprinklings of vivid colour dotted around my garden borders; a subtle change in seasons ringing in the early signs of Summer on its way.

Since working on the print, the tulips have all gone over and I hope Tulip Daze takes you back to their magnificent display as a reminder of the glorious colour that brightened up our gardens. This linocut print is a courteous nod to nature’s bounty found all around us, and drawing in that connection from outer landscape towards our inner-home.

The linocut print is made in the reduction technique. This is a method of block printing where each colour layer is taken from the same block, carving each layer and printing the next colour on top of the last. There are nine layers in total on this strongly vibrant Tulip Daze print - one of which is a shade of red inked and rolled directly on the lino block in a painterly, monoprint technique, printed, and then carved away for the next translucent green layer, allowing for the soft underlying tone of red to peek through. Inking in this painterly way creates a more fluid depth of tone, indicating subtle colour changes brought about by the daze of dappled sunlight. Each layer of colour is mixed using a hint of the previous colour to keep within the hue and tonal range.

Tulip Daze is lovingly carved on Battleship grey lino, printed with oil based printmaking ink, using an etching press. To reflect the vibrant red and soft texture of the flower, I chose to print on Fabriano paper. Intentional choices are made when selecting the block and paper to print on; each to compliment the plant in its form, within its landscape.

Signed and numbered edition of 34.

Please note, due to the handprinted nature, each print is unique and there will be slight variations within each edition.
