Traditional Temple Bell (Bonsho) (2014) Original Watercolour by Masato Watanabe

This watercolor painting depicts a traditional Japanese temple bell (Bonsho) hanging inside a historic wooden bell tower.
Unlike my general landscape works, I chose a closer composition to focus on the details of the architecture and the object. I represented the textures of the aged wood using dark brown tones and deep shadows under the eaves, contrasting them with the white walls and decorative structures. The bronze bell is placed near the center, painted with subtle green tones to show its weathered surface. My focus was on capturing the structural balance of the traditional building and the quiet atmosphere of the temple grounds exactly as I observed them.
