The Yellow Duck (2026) Original Acrylic Painting by Zakhar Shevchuk

A tiny yellow bath duck occupies only a fraction of this large 150x200 cm painting, yet everything seems to organise itself around it. Zakhar Shevchuk exaggerates this imbalance deliberately: the duck is rendered with almost childlike directness, while the surrounding pictorial space is expansive, layered and materially complex.

A pale-blue bath anchors the composition, framed by loosely painted vegetation and fragmented passages of turquoise, pink, white and green. Above it stretches an unusually large yellow field. Rather than constructing a coherent interior, Shevchuk allows these elements to hover between recognisable objects and autonomous areas of paint. Scratched lines, exposed gestures and drips preserve the physical process of making the image.

The Yellow Duck belongs to Shevchuk’s early-2026 exploration of a freer visual vocabulary combining naïve figuration with expressive and increasingly abstract painting. Its humour comes partly from disproportion: a monumental canvas appears to have been devoted to an insignificant bath toy. Yet that small yellow form becomes an unexpectedly compelling point of stillness amid the painting’s shifting surroundings.
