The Red House with a Deer (2024) Original Oil Painting by Natalia Matveeva

After visiting Wismar — the city where the legendary film Nosferatu was filmed — I wanted to capture the atmosphere of this story in a small painting. I combined a real place with historical associations and created a dreamlike landscape with a mysterious figure, an unusual house, and a vivid, contrasting colour palette.

This landscape can be described as mysterious, fantastical, and decorative. It combines graphic forms with expressive colour contrasts. Through colour, composition, and stylized imagery, I aimed to convey a sense of mystery and the subtle unease evoked by the story of Nosferatu.

The painting is created with oil on a thin canvas that I stretched by hand. It was painted over a red imprimatura and finished with a protective varnish. The edges of the canvas are painted red, allowing the artwork to be displayed without a frame.
