- The Ludham Dragon
Artwork description
Limited edition print of the Ludham Dragon. Ludham is a small village in the Norfolk Broads.
In 1782, the villagers were terrorised by a huge and monstrous dragon. It would only appear after sunset, so the villagers dare not leave their houses after dark. During the day, the dragon hid in an underground burrow. Unusually, one day, the dragon left its burrow during the daytime to bask in the sun. A quick-witted and courageous villager rolled an enormous stone over the entrance of the burrow. When the dragon returned, it couldn’t enter and was thrown into a fury. Lashing its tail wildly, it flew away toward the ruins of St. Benet’s Abbey, where it disappeared through the archway into the vaults beneath. It has never been seen again, but who knows what became of it?
(The print shows St. Benet’s Abbey and St. Catherine’s Church in Ludham.)
