The Last Warm Light captures the brief transition when daylight is almost gone, yet its warmth remains suspended above the horizon.
The composition is built around a dramatic contrast between the expansive sky and the narrow coastal landscape below. Layers of blue, violet and turquoise descend through the upper part of the painting, interrupted by passages of pale yellow, peach and luminous gold. Along the distant shoreline, the final traces of sunlight appear as a thin incandescent line, echoed by small reflections across the water.
Rather than describing the sky literally, I approached it through color, movement and texture. Broad passages of oil paint dissolve into heavily worked impasto, allowing the changing atmosphere to become almost physical. The lower part of the painting grows darker and more concentrated, with rocky forms and scattered touches of warm color creating a counterpoint to the openness above.
The unusual vertical format emphasizes the scale of the sky. The coastline occupies only a small part of the composition, giving the painting a sense of distance and making the remaining light feel temporary — a last moment of warmth before the landscape disappears into evening.
Painted in expressive layers of oil, the surface changes with the surrounding light, revealing variations of blue, lavender, turquoise, gold and deep earth tones.
