Award-Winning Original Pastel Painting

The King is an original pastel wildlife portrait celebrating the strength, dignity and commanding presence of the lion.

For this portrait, I wanted to capture something beyond the lion's physical power. There is a natural confidence and authority in these magnificent animals that does not need aggression or movement to be felt.

The lion's expression became the heart of the painting. His calm, direct presence creates a sense of quiet strength, while the detailed mane frames the face and emphasises the character and majesty that inspired the title The King.

The artwork was created entirely by hand using professional artist-quality pastels on paper. I gradually developed the portrait through many layers, combining soft tonal transitions with extremely fine pastel strokes to create depth, texture and the natural movement of the fur and mane.

For me, wildlife realism is about more than reproducing an animal's appearance. I want to capture something of its individuality and presence — creating a portrait that allows the viewer to feel the character of the animal as well as see it.
