Time turns backward in the circular pool where the dark fish winks at the statue of Venus as a young girl. The crumbling wall still stands on the terrace where the stairs lead down to the sea, and the nymph Arethusa still rises from the water in the fragment of a fresco that remains on the old wall. As resplendent as when we saw her in the cool shade of the atrium. All around, the grass grows lush, reaching the pool where the green water gathers, dreamily deep beneath the damp vaults. A white heron, standing apart, glows in the light of day.
