"The Cat" 100x140cm (2024) Original Mixed-media Painting by Sergii Donovyi
100 x 140.5 x 3.5cm (unframed)

Original artwork description
A striking portrait of a regal cat with piercing blue eyes and an imposing golden crown. The creature combines feline elegance with an almost mythical, human-like presence, creating an ambiguous character that can be read as both majestic and slightly unsettling.
The realistic modelling of the cat contrasts with the expressive, layered background of pastel tones, drips and spontaneous marks. This tension between precise figurative detail and an energetic, imperfect background gives the painting its distinctive character.
The image is inspired by the mysticism of Carlos Castaneda and Eastern philosophical ideas of transformation, impermanence, and the fluidity of form. The cat becomes more than a portrait of an animal — it suggests a shifting state between identities, where familiar forms can transform and reveal something unexpected.
The crown introduces a subtle sense of irony, raising questions about power, status and the roles we assign to those we place above ourselves. The cat seems to look directly at the viewer, calm and self-assured, as if it already knows its position.
