A blooming flower sits at the center of this copper wall sculpture, framed by overlapping architectural forms. The flower’s curves echo the geometry behind it, unifying natural and manmade elements in a fluid composition. Only one has been made.
The design was inspired by old-world monuments, where the harmony between manmade construction and nature was central to how spaces were built. Stylistically, the piece bridges old and new. The architectural motifs feel classical but not fixed to any one era or culture. The lines and contours are clean enough to read as contemporary, yet have a weathered gravity that feels ancient.
MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION
This artwork was sculpted by hand from copper using traditional metal forming techniques. Though it looks like a solid copper slab, the sculpture is a metal shell shaped from a single copper sheet roughly as thick as a penny. Inside the shell is a wood support structure that adds internal stability and provides a secure place to attach the hanging hardware.
The surface was shaped entirely by hand using a variety of specialty hammers, punches, and air-powered tools. High points in the design were pushed out from the back of the copper sheet, and recessed areas were formed by hammering down from the front. The metal was repeatedly heated to make it soft and pliable, then shaped and reworked in stages. The surface depth was driven directly into the metal by thousands of hammer blows, rather than created by adding or removing material. These hammer marks are visible across the entire surface, creating a rich texture that shows tool paths and the story of the sculpture's construction. The raised relief is about 1/4 inch deep.
FINISH AND PATINA
The deep brown patina was developed through a natural oxidation process accelerated using salts, acids and chemicals. This patina is chemically bonded to the metal and will continue to slowly evolve naturally over time. The sculpture is sealed with Renaissance Wax—a museum-grade wax originally developed by the British Museum for preservation. It provides a protective barrier that slows further oxidation while allowing the metal to continue its natural aging. Unlike synthetic clear coats, the wax does not yellow, crack or permanently alter the copper. Reapplying the wax every few years can help preserve the finish and restore luster.
DIMENSIONS AND HANGING
The sculpture measures 30¼ inches tall, 20½ inches wide, and 1¾ inches deep. The sculpture weighs approximately 32 pounds and uses a French cleat style hanger to mount flush to the wall.
