Contemporary still life painting. Yellow and gold sunflowers burst onto the canvas in this heavily textured still life. The texture was created by adding pumice from lava rock to the oil paints. The vase is painted in vivid hues of red and rust colors against a background of blue, grey and brown. Michael Kaysen, juror, selected this painting for the Artistic License exhibit at Studio 659 in Indiana, 2012. He is a museum specialist at the Art Institute of Chicago.
