Still waters (2026) Original Watercolour by Aleksandra Mitkalova

This painting was inspired by a scene I discovered in the Botanical Garden of Lisbon.

I was fascinated by the way the dark water absorbed and reflected the different shades of the blue sky, while the leaves scattered across its surface transformed the sombre pond into something colourful and shimmering. I enjoy looking for subtle variations of colour and discovering tones in places where, at first glance, there seem to be none.

In this work, I wanted to capture the sense of movement and mystery within the water - the shifting reflections, the ripples, and the constant interplay between what is above and what is beneath the surface. The painting became an exploration of how light and colour can transform a seemingly dark and quiet subject into something vibrant and alive.

For me, painting is a way of slowing down and looking closely at the world, allowing unexpected colours, rhythms and moods to emerge through observation.
