Soft Light on the Riverside 03 (2026) Original Acrylic Painting by Elise Eekhout

‘Soft Light on the Riverside 03’ was inspired by an early morning walk along the river, when the sun began to rise through the cold air and its light caught the surface of the water. I was fascinated by the shifting interplay of light, colour and reflection, and by the atmosphere of that quiet moment.

I used the landscape as a starting point for exploring the boundary between the figurative and the abstract. The image is less literal than my forest landscapes, while still retaining a sense of depth and place.

I also wanted to move beyond my usual palette of natural greens, browns and earthy tones, experimenting with colour as a way of expressing mood rather than simply describing the landscape.
