This was a long time in the making. I have a great fascination in caves and cave art.
Smoo Cave is a large cave formed by the action of both the sea and underground streams in Durness in the north of Scotland. The walkway winds down from the land above to the tidal gorge below. The entrance is huge at 15m high – you can judge the scale in the picture by the golden bridge in front of the mouth.
The painting uses acrylic paint on acid-free tissue paper mounted on 290 gsm watercolour paper. The texture created by the wrinkled tissue paper is accentuated by Conté, charcoal and watercolour pencil. The walkway itself is rendered in gold acrylic. I believe the whole combines to create the feeling of tapestry. The picture has been given a final layer of protection with Golden UV satin varnish.
