SHOEBILL (2026) Original Wood Sculpture by Eleanor Gabriel

£1,355.84

SHOEBILL is a quirky, offbeat and original art brut sculpture that combines wood, metal and recycled leather.

Quite a strange-looking creature, it’s a cross between a shoebill stork and an ostrich.

Its head and body are made from the wood of two large calabashes, carved using fine wood pulp, then painted with acrylics and varnished.

Its beak is made from genuine leather, taken from an old child’s bicycle saddle…

One of its legs is a rusty metal rod and the other is made of black bamboo.

Shoebill wears a sort of neck gaiter cut from the genuine leather of an old cowboy boot, repainted and restructured, and medieval-style slippers…

His eyes are made of blown glass, like most CalbinoOz figures, and his wings are made from old goatskin leather salvaged from a flea market, cut to size and repainted with acrylics.

Finally, his tail features three beautiful authentic peacock feathers collected during moulting season by a neighbour who keeps pet peacocks.

Dimensions including homemade base: H 113 x W 28 x D 42 cm (including tail)

Piece signed on the base.

Materials used:

strips of natural dried plant material, coconut husks, surfine wood pulp acrylic paint, varnish.
