This painting is based on the original photograph 'Female Ruby-throated Hummingbird Hardest Worker', by Cindy Treger, whose express consent has been requested to use it as a reference.

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds live in open woodlands, forest edges, meadows, grasslands, and in parks, gardens, and backyards. They fly straight and fast but can stop instantly, hover, and adjust their position up, down, or backwards with exquisite control. They often visit hummingbird feeders and tube-shaped flowers and defend these food sources against others.

As seen in this scene, and despite its name, the Ruby-throated hummingbird females do not have a red neck, but a white one, and it is the males that have a dark gorget when it is not illuminated, and a striking ruby color under the light. Another curious fact about females is that they tend to be a little larger than males, although neither of both normally exceeds 5 grams in weight or 4 inches in length (10 centimeters).

Materials used:

Paper, oil painting.
