Shared Roots (2023) Original Acrylic Painting by Gela MIKAVA

50 x 50 x 3cm (unframed)

£739.04

Shared Roots is a contemporary figurative painting from the ROOTS series, inspired by Georgian and Caucasian cultural heritage and traditional dress.

A female and male figure stand side by side, their elongated silhouettes emerging from an almost monochromatic white space. Elements of traditional Caucasian clothing — including the distinctive graphic details of the chokha — are reduced to bold black lines and simplified forms.

The pairing of the two figures evokes continuity, belonging and a shared cultural memory. Rather than documenting historical costume, the artist transforms traditional forms into a contemporary visual language, exploring the relationship between ancestry and present-day identity.

The restrained white and grey palette is punctuated by black details and the woman's red lips, creating a quiet yet striking composition.

Original artwork, 50 × 50 cm.
