Seven Sisters from Hope Gap (2025) Original Oil Painting by Chris Marshall

26.5 x 31.5 x 3cm (framed)

£130

Arguably the best few miles of the South Downs Way is the switchback along the clifftops of the Seven Sisters. The Sussex coast is about an hour away from where I live, and I have walked these cliffs often. This is the view from Hope Gap which, for those who know the area a bit, is just to the west of Cuckmere Haven. I was particularly drawn to the challenges of capturing the translucent sea in the foreground, and the bright light on the nearby cliffs on the left of the painting. The cliffs of the Seven Sisters occupy a small corner of the painting, but it was also vital to get them right, as they are so familiar, not just to me but to countless local people and visitors. It is painted in oils on a canvas board.
